Thermal Tech was founded in 2017 to address what we consider most critical to civilization, which we at the time believed also to be the two overarching global issues of the future:
1. Sufficient power – in particular electrical power:
clean/green non-polluting
suitable for baseload/on demand
economical
2. Plentiful pure, potable water – for human consumption and for agriculture
Time has not changed our perspective.
Issue #1:
For electrical power, our goal was -- and is -- not to follow the currently well-beaten paths. We are looking for new approaches in thermodynamics and fluid dynamics, since heat and motion are traditional sources of energy.
Our initial focus was on determining where the “gaps” were. Where are there available, accessible, low-cost sources of energy that are not currently being tapped? This led us to waste heat and geothermal heat – two true sweet spots. And our name. We have patents in this area.
The DOE has estimated that if waste heat from industrial processes alone could be converted to electricity it would amount to 5 times current US consumption. And geothermal potential, depending on assumptions, could significantly increase capacity.
But there is much more. We continue our search, seeking to improve the economics of energy production while avoiding contaminating the environment. One of our fundamental principles is that a polluting process is an inefficient and wasteful process.
Finally, we are looking for novel solutions – ideally, breakthroughs.
Issue #2:
For pure water, our goal was -- and is -- to be open to all possible methods to produce clean H2O. It is not surprising that heat and/or electrical power is a component of most solutions, from evaporative distillation to reverse osmosis. Solutions to Issue #1 can help.
Economics, ability to scale, and environmental impacts are key factors.
Here again, we have minimal interest in tweaking current technology around the edges. We live on a planet where over 70% of the surface is covered by water. A true breakthrough is needed.
We are entrepreneurs who have founded and led successful companies and organizations. We are interested in making a difference, helping the world, and focusing on what is important – all while keeping lean and having fun.
